Behind the Scene with Nefeli
"Frappe and much more..."

Theatre Nefeli's 2011 production once again brought to their audiences the importance of the preservation of our Hellenic heritage but with a new force as now the voices of those of the 7th generation of Nefeli performers. They promised us in "The Suitcase" that they were ready to carry on the Hellenic spirit, pride and our heritage into the future with them and now they needed to have their message heard. They are not "Xenakia" and they ache for Mana Ellada just as much as if they had been born there, so they wanted their voices to count.

HHF Supports Hellenic Studies in N.B.

The Hellenic Heritage Foundation has offered a donation of $4,500 to the Centre for Hellenic Studies at the University of New Brunswick. Our contribution allows the Department to continue offering the first year Modern Greek language course during the second term.

This course offering provides a wonderful opportunity for students of Green and non-Greek background to learn the Hellenic language at the University level and to develop an understanding of Greek culture. For New Brunswick, and Atlantic Canada in general, such an opportunity did not exist prior to the establishment of the Centre.

Moreover, it will afford students in the Classical Studies program, who are pursuing studies in Hellenic culture, the opportunity to attend the UNB's summer intersession courses and archeological field schools in Greece.

The 40th Anniversary Historical Album Project
Committee (HAC) releases
The Greeks of the Niagara Region.

Researched and produced by the 40th Anniversary Historical Album Project Committee (HAC), this 304-page limited edition, hardcover book celebrates the historical and cultural achievements of the Greek Community of Niagara (GCN) from 1968 to 2008. It also traces the path of Greek settlement in the peninsula dating back to the early 1900s. For the first time, the history of Hellenism in the Niagara Region is chronicled through images, stories and historical events, as well as highlighting the contributions of individuals, who made their mark on the fabric of Canadian society.

This visual and textual retrospective was officially launched on June 26th, 2010 during a special ceremony hosted at the GCN in St. Catharines. The HHF's President, John Fanaras, attended the book launch and was presented with a copy on behalf of the organization.

Copies have been added to the collections of Library and Archives Canada, the Archives of Ontario, the Multicultural History Society of Ontario, and the Toronto Public Library System (Metro Reference), as well as Niagara area resources.

This initiative was made possible by the generous financial support from our funding partners, the City of St. Catharines through the Cultural Investment Program (SCCIP), and the Hellenic Heritage Foundation.

The Greeks of the Niagara Region is available for purchase at a special price of $55 CDN. It can be ordered by phone (905-685-3028) or through HAC's dedicated website.

Distinguished Guest Speaker Series 2010
Professor Dimitrios Pandermalis

Dr. Dimitrios Pandermalis, President and Curator of the Acropolis Museum in Athens, was the keynote speaker at the inaugural event of the Hellenic Canadian Academic Association of Ontario's (HCAAO) annual Distinguished Guest Speaker Series, on March 25, 2010, at the Royal Ontario Museum, his topic being "The Acropolis Museum in Athens: Architecture and Collections".

This HCAAO event was organized in partnership with the Royal Ontario Museum, the Hellenic Heritage Foundation, the World Council of Hellenes Abroad, the Consulate General of Greece in Toronto, and in collaboration with the HHF Chair in Modern Greek History at York University.

The event was a great success on all fronts. The enthusiastic feedback received following this event is a testimony of the value created in the community at large, by helping increase people's awareness and appreciation of the new Acropolis Museum, its architecture and collections.

Dr. Pandermalis' visit contributed significantly to the important cause of the re-unification of the Parthenon marbles.

The presentation began with a brief history of the Acropolis Museum and a descriptive narrative of the Museum as a construction project.

Key issues in construction such as location, archaeological excavation and architectural style were highlighted.

The incorporation of the archaeological excavation as a major Museum exhibit and the principles underlying the mounting of the exhibition program were described by Dr. Pandermalis and illustrated by a series of high quality images.

The presentation concluded with a walk through the museum with a particular focus on the presentation of the divided Parthenon marbles in the Museum's Parthenon Gallery. For more information on the museum please visit www.theacropolismuseum.gr.
